ONU's Heldt, VU's Poppe Land Women's Indoor T&F Weekly Honors
CHICAGO --- Olivet Nazarene University's Heidi Heldt (Weldon, Ill.) won a pair of events, while Viterbo University's Avery Poppe (Hayward, Wis.) set another school mark during the seven-day period from Jan. 26-Feb. 1 to score Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Women's Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week recognition. The league office made the announcement on Wednesday.
Poppe returned to the awards stand for the second week in a row as the CCAC Field Athlete of the Week after establishing a new school record one week after initially setting it. That came at the University of Minnesota Mankato Mark Schuck Open and Multi in the long jump event of the pentathlon on Thursday.
The sophomore had a leap of 5.79 meters, which placed her third among 26 qualifiers. The distance is now the tenth-best mark in the NAIA this winter.
Heldt captured each of her races at ONU's own Invitational on Friday to warrant CCAC Track Athlete of the Week accord for the second time this season. Her time of 2:54.19 in the 1,000-meter race is currently the second-fastest time in the 'A' category.
She also now boasts the seventh-fastest time in the 800-meter event at 2:16.32, which hit the 'B' standard.
Other Track Nominees: Sophia Flowers (Governors State), Emily Ludwig (Viterbo), Yanira Deana Paninka (Saint Xavier).
Other Field Nominees: Trenyce Bonner (Governors State), Jamie Sierocki (Saint Xavier), Aayla-Marie Adams (Judson), Grace Pauli (Olivet Nazarene).
