SXU's Cox, Velez, Daniels Repeat With Men's Volleyball Weekly Honors Sweep
CHICAGO --- For the second week in a row, Saint Xavier University swept the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference men's volleyball weekly awards with the same three Cougars garnering the recognition in Caydann Cox (Helena, Mont.), Andres Velez (Toa Baja, Puerto Rico) and Cameron Daniels (Omaha, Neb.). The league office made the announcement on Tuesday after SXU defeated a pair of NAIA Top 15 clubs over the weekend.
Daniels continued his run of CCAC Setter of the Week plaudits, remaining perfect at 3-for-3 this season courtesy of his 11.67 assist average and 2.0 digs per contest. The junior totaled 39 assists in just three sets (13.0 avg.) and six digs in a three-set win over NAIA No. 11 Grand View University (Iowa) on Friday. That was followed by another six digs, 31 assists (10.33 avg.) and two blocks in a straight-set victory opposite No. 15 William Penn University (Iowa) on Saturday.
Cox, meanwhile, gained his second straight CCAC Attacker of the Week award with his 3.83 kills per set and .333 attack percentage. He was equally strong defensively with no errors in 28 reception attempts, six blocks and eight digs.
Five of the blocks came in the win over William Penn on Saturday, where Cox also had nine kills, four digs and 16 receptions. The junior outside hitter delivered 14 kills (4.67 avg.) via a .370 hitting clip with another 12 passes and four more digs one night earlier versus Grand View.
Velez was also perfect in the receiving department to earn CCAC Defender of the Week accolades for the second week in a row. He was 23-for-23 in that department, while averaging 3.5 digs per set.
Twelve of Velez's 21 digs on the week (4.0 avg.) came against Grand View. He authored the same number of passes in that match.
The senior libero produced 11 more receptions and another nine digs versus William Penn.
Winners of four matches in a row, the No. 2-ranked Cougars are 5-2 overall.
