ONU's Thaqi, SXU's Martinez Collect Men's Soccer Weekly Awards
CHICAGO --- Week 3 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week honors have been claimed by Olivet Nazarene University's Atjon Thaqi (Switzerland) and Saint Xavier University's Daniel Martinez (Cicero, Ill.), the league office announced on Tuesday morning.
Thaqi garnered the offensive recognition after being instrumental in the Tigers' 2-1 upset of NAIA No. 16-ranked Marian University (Ind.) on Wednesday. The freshman midfielder accounted for both goals, including the game-winner with under nine minutes remaining in the contest.
Olivet Nazarene went 1-1 on the week and is 2-1-1 overall.
Martinez was named the CCAC Defensive Player of the Week after registering his second shutout of the season. The senior stopped all four shots that came his way in a 4-0 victory over Indiana University Columbus last Monday. He added another four saves in a 2-0 setback to Campbellsville University (Ky.) on Saturday.
SXU's split decision on the week kept the Cougars at .500 (2-2) on the season.
