Men's Soccer Weekly Honors Claimed By GSU's Herrero Corrales, TIU's Mahmutovic
CHICAGO --- Two big goals from Governors State University's Julian Herrero Corrales (San Jose, Costa Rica) and a pair of shutouts by Trinity International University's Armin Mahmutovic (Chicago, Ill.) have earned the pair Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week accolades, respectively. The league office made the announcement Tuesday morning for competition during the seven-day period between Oct. 17-23.
Corrales' first two goals of his collegiate career nearly helped Governors State pull off the upset of first-place and NAIA No. 15-ranked Olivet Nazarene University last Wednesday. The freshman defender produced his scores just 17 minutes apart starting 12 minutes into the second half before Olivet Nazarene rallied with two of its own goals in the closing four minutes to escape with a 2-2 tie.
The contest was the only one of the week for Governors State, which is 7-3-5 overall and 6-1-3 in conference matches.
Mahmutovic earned his second defensive honor of the season after not allowing a goal in either of his two matches last week. The sophomore stopped three shots in a 4-0 victory over Calumet College of St. Joseph last Wednesday. He doubled that count (six saves) in a 1-0 decision over St. Ambrose University on Saturday for nine total saves on the week.
Mahmutovic's numbers over the seven-day period did nothing to upset his conference rankings. He currently holds the top spot in shutouts among all league goalkeepers with seven, while sitting second in both total saves (87) and save percentage (.806).
Trinity International bumped its record up to 9-6-1 overall and 6-4-1 in conference matches with the two victories last week.
Other Offensive Nominees: Edvin Grolimund (Cardinal Stritch), Fernando Barragan (Saint Xavier), Samuel Chavez (Judson), Trenton Garside (Trinity International), Juan Perez (Holy Cross), Benjamin Struebelt (Olivet Nazarene).
Other Defensive Nominees: Emigdio Tormo Lopez (Governors State), Fabio Hasler (Olivet Nazarene), Aaron The (Cardinal Stritch), Martin Von Thun (Holy Cross), Andres Zamora (Saint Xavier).
