Saint Xavier University used its 19th-place finish at the NAIA national championship meet last year to claim the No. 16 spot in the 2009 NAIA Women's Cross Country Preseason Coaches' Poll, which was released by the NAIA national office on Wednesday.

SXU picked up 270 votes to earn the placement and was joined by Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference rivals Illinois Institute of Technology and Olivet Nazarene University in the poll. Both IIT and ONU were among others receiving votes, gaining one nod each.

Simon Fraser University (B.C.), a winner of ten national titles, garnered 11 of the 21 first-place votes to land atop the poll with 573 total votes despite finishing 11th one year ago. Defending champion Azusa Pacific University (Calif.) dropped down to the No. 7 spot with nary a first-place vote, while No. 2 Cedarville University (Ohio) (563 votes) and No. 3 Biola University (Calif.) picked up the other 10 first-place votes.
