ELGIN, Ill. --- Three upsets and two blowouts told the story of the first day at the 2017 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament as No. 3 seed St. Ambrose University and No. 5 seed Saint Xavier University each put up 13 runs on the board and Saint Xavier, No. 7 seed University of St. Francis and No. 8 seed Indiana University South Bend all scored the surprises.

Saint Xavier and St. Ambrose posted identical 13-2 wins over No. 4 Purdue University Northwest and No. 6 Robert Morris University Illinois, while St. Francis and Indiana South Bend got late tie-breaking runs to knock off No. 2 Olivet Nazarene University 3-2 in 10 innings and No. 1 Judson 8-5, respectively.

That sets up winner's bracket games to start play Saturday with St. Francis (31-24) taking on St. Ambrose (25-23) at 10:30 a.m. and Indiana South Bend (23-24) versus Saint Xavier (25-27) to follow at 1:30 p.m.  In elimination games, Purdue Northwest (29-16) meets Judson (37-17) at 4:30 p.m. with Olivet Nazarene (31-18) facing Robert Morris Illinois (26-26) at 7:30 p.m.

Recapping Friday:

Saint Xavier 13, Purdue Northwest 2 (Box): Saint Xavier's top three in the order – Alex Neufeld, Ryan Pellack and Matt Monahan – all collected three hits with Pellack driving in four runs on a pair of two-run home runs and Monahan also homering.  Ben Zordani also got in on the 15-hit attack with three hits and three runs batted in for the Cougars, who turned a tight 2-1 game into the lopsided affair with 11 runs over the last three innings.  Tyler Hebel (6-5) was the benefactor of the offensive outburst on the mound.

St. Ambrose 13, Robert Morris Illinois 2 (Box): An eight-run fifth-inning outburst enabled St. Ambrose to turn a 3-2 lead into an 11-2 advantage en route to the 11-run win.  Four Bee players authored multiple hits as part of a 16-hit attack topped by Mike Miller's four hits.  Kevin Zanger and David Gonzalez both drove in two runs as part of their three-hit days with Jake McCabe adding two hits and two runs batted in.  Jake Sheley (7-7) went the distance for the win on the mound.

St. Francis 3, Olivet Nazarene 2 (Box): In a game that saw two players record their first collegiate home runs, St. Francis' Matt Kramer's was the more dramatic one with his pinch-hit blast to open the tenth inning proving to be the game-winner.  Pat Michalak scored the other two runs for the Saints via three hits.  St. Francis starting pitcher Kevin Mampe (5-6) hung around until the end, throwing 119 pitches to post the complete-game effort.  He struck out six and walked four, while allowing four hits.  Three of those hits came off the bat of Gabe Sevigny, including his first career home run to give the Tigers an early 1-0 lead.

Indiana South Bend 8, Judson 5 (Box): Indiana South Bend provided the third upset of the day, but had to score three runs in both the eighth and ninth innings to make it complete.  After the Titans went up 5-1 in the top of the eighth inning, Judson rallied to tie it in the bottom half of the inning with four runs keyed by David Matthews' two-run double.  Tanner Wesp's three-run home run in the eighth inning as part of a 2-for-4 day for him was one of many big hits for Indiana South Bend.  Chris Mangus had three others, including a solo home run, as he drove in a pair of runs and scored three times.  Zane Gonzalez (5-3) gained the win with two innings of scoreless relief.
