CHICAGO --- After claiming its first Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference regular-season title in 16 years, NAIA No. 11-ranked University of St. Francis will attempt to make history when it seeks out its first-ever CCAC Tournament crown this weekend at The Ballpark at Rosemont.  Seven other member schools will look to keep that history from happening when the eight-team, double-elimination tournament kicks off Thursday morning at 8 a.m.

While the Saints (37-5) did claim the regular-season title, they weren't unsolvable, falling three times in 24 league contests during the regular season, including once each to tournament teams Judson University (No. 3 seed, 32-13) and Cardinal Stritch University (No. 6, 26-21).  Judson splits its two games with the Saints last week (Apr. 27), falling 9-1 before winning 4-2.  Cardinal Stritch and St. Francis split on April 9 with the Saints winning the opener 5-2 and falling in the nightcap 5-4.

Defending tournament champion Olivet Nazarene (28-10) also is in the mix after finishing right behind St. Francis in the regular-season standings at 19-5.  The rest of the field features No. 4 seed Purdue University Northwest (28-21-1), No. 5 St. Ambrose University (31-16), No. 7 Saint Xavier University (22-24) and No. 8 Trinity Christian College (18-20).

The tournament runs from Thursday through Saturday with Monday and Tuesday as rain dates.

Along with St. Francis as the regular-season champion, the winner of the tournament advances to the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round, which will be held May 15-17 at one of eight possible sites.  Should the Saints also win the conference tournament, the second-place tournament finisher would earn the conference's second automatic bid to the Opening Round.F
