Women’s Basketball – DII - Tue, Feb. 28, 2017

Joliet, Ill. – Shooting 61 percent (19-for-31) from the field and 71 percent (10-for-14) from three-point range in the second half, the No. 3 ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team extended its 38-28 halftime lead in a big way en route to an impressive 88-64 win over previous unbeaten (31-1 overall) and No. 1 ranked University of St. Francis (Ill.) to claim the 2017 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Tournament title Tuesday night at the Sullivan Center in Joliet, Ill.  The Cougars (30-2 overall) were led by junior guard Kara Krolicki (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) with 22 points, while junior center Brittany Collins (Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West) notched a double-double with 20 points and game-high 12 rebounds.  It is the first CCAC Tournament championship for SXU since 2012 and eighth in program history.

Senior guard Mikayla Leyden (Chicago, Ill./Trinity) had an impressive all-around outing as well for the Cougars posting 19 points, seven rebounds and five assists.  Freshman guard/forward Chanel Fanter (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) also finished in double figures for Saint Xavier in scoring draining four three-pointers for 16 points.  Senior guard Charnelle Reed paced the Fighting Saints with 33 points and nine rebounds.  The Cougars were in control of the game from the early stages with USF's last lead (4-3) coming in the opening two minutes of play.  A three-point play by Collins with four minutes left in the first quarter put SXU up 14-5.  The Saints finished the frame strong closing the gap to just four, 19-15, and then carried the momentum into the second quarter where a three-point play by Reed tied the game at 22-22 with 7:32 remaining in the half.

Saint Xavier maintained its composure and built a 10-point lead (38-28) heading into halftime thanks in part to some big jumpers late in the quarter by Collins.  A pair of three-pointers by Krolicki early in the third quarter pushed the advantage up to 17 points (46-29), but another strong finish to the quarter for USF made the score, 65-54, going into the final period.  The Cougars continued to hit big shots down the stretch outscoring the hosts, 23-10, in the fourth quarter to clinch the tournament title.

Saint Xavier (30-2 overall/18-2 CCAC) now awaits the 32-team bracket for the upcoming NAIA Division II Women's Basketball National Championship that is scheduled for release on Wednesday, March 1.  The 32 NAIA National Championship qualifiers and national championship bracket will be announced at 5 p.m. CST on March 1 via a live selection show.
