Women’s Basketball – DII - Sun, Feb. 26, 2017

CHICAGO --- Two of the top three ranked teams in the nation will square off against one another for the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament championship when No. 1 and undefeated University of St. Francis (31-0) hosts No. 3 Saint Xavier University (29-2) Tuesday night at the Sullivan Center in Joliet, Ill.  Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.

Saint Xavier got to the title game in convincing fashion, scoring a 104-72 win over No. 3 seed Purdue University Northwest, while St. Francis eked out a 53-50 decision over No. 4 seed Cardinal Stritch University in semifinal-round action on Saturday.

In their only meeting this season, St. Francis jumped out to a big lead early en route to handing Saint Xavier its first loss of the season, 80-70, back on Jan. 7 in Chicago.  The Cougars' only other loss came at the hands of Cardinal Stritch.

With the two division champions in St. Francis and Saint Xavier meeting for the tournament crown, that also punches Purdue Northwest's ticket to the NAIA National Championships March 8-14 in Sioux City, Iowa after the Pride finished the regular season as the No. 3 seed.  The league automatically receives three berths to the championships.

Recapping Saturday:

Saint Xavier 104, Purdue Northwest 72 (Box) --- For the second straight playoff game, Saint Xavier jumped out to a quick lead – 34-13 after the first quarter – and never was threatened the rest of the afternoon in the 32-point win.  Kara Krolicki paced the attack with 24 points and six assists, while Brittany Collins provided a double-double (14 points, 14 rebounds) and Maddie Welter added 19 points.  Purdue Northwest's Darien Thompson led all scorers with 32 points.  Saint Xavier shot .571 from the field in the decisive first half, while Purdue Northwest hit just 33.3 percent of its shots in the opening 20 minutes.  The Cougars also were 13-of-26 from three-point range, perfect from the foul line (15-of-15), and held a 43-30 rebounding advantage.

St. Francis 53, Cardinal Stritch 50 (Box) --- St. Francis was held to its lowest point total since the finale of the 2014-15 season, but still prevailed thanks to the hot hand of Christina Ekhomu (16 points) late in the third quarter and early in the fourth stanza.  Her first of three treys on the night tied the game for the sixth time late in the third quarter, her second put the Saints up for good and her third gave the hosts their biggest lead of the night (6 points), all within a three-minute, 46-second time frame.  Kelli Schrauth (18 points, 8 rebounds) and the Wolves did all they could to hand USF its first loss of the season, including holding the Saints to 33.3 percent shooting from the field.
