Thanks to her role with Love Your Melon, St. Ambrose junior guard Deanna Busse has been named to the 2016 Allstate WBCA Good Works Team, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and Allstate Insurance Company announced today.

In its fourth year, this prestigious award honors college basketball athletes who have dedicated themselves to bettering the lives of others through giving back to their communities.

Of the 103 nominees from colleges and universities across the country, Busse, from Prior Lake, Minn., is among 10 remarkable student-athletes named to the team for the positive impact she's had on the community and lives of others.

Members of the team will be recognized during the 2016 WBCA Convention and at the 2016 NCAA Women's Final Four in Indianapolis, and will also participate in a local service project.

Busse is the founder and Crew Captain of the St. Ambrose chapter of Love Your Melon, a non-profit company that began with the goal of putting a hat on every child battling cancer in this country. Love Your Melon's mission is to end childhood cancer through therapeutic programming, immediate support and research.

In less than a year, her original four-member Crew grew to 20 members with a 10-person waiting list. In April 2015, Busse and the SAU Love Your Melon Crew held their own donation event at the University of Iowa Children's Hospital, where dressed as superheroes, they donated more than 60 hats to children while visiting with them and their families.

In August, the LYM Crew participated in the HyVee PinkySwear Triathlon, where they spent the day with two all-star families, cheered on kids and handed out Love Your Melon hats. Then in October, the crew participated in the National Love Your Melon Day by handing out hats to children at the Ronald McDonald House in Iowa City. That evening, Busse and the crew completed a household donation event in Bettendorf, Iowa, where they made superhero capes and handed out more LYM hats.

On the court, Busse is averaging 5.2 points and shooting better than 35 percent from beyond the arc for the No. 24-ranked Bees. She hit four 3-pointers and scored a career-high 17 points in a win at Mount Mercy earlier this season.
