    Men's Basketball - D1-D2 - Thu, Jan. 7, 2016

The Calumet College of St. Joseph men's basketball team made a big splash to begin the 2016 New Year earning a significant Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference upset victory on their home court against the #2 (NAIA Coaches Poll) ranked University of St. Francis – IL, 63-57.

The Crimson Wave would set the tone early with a 10-2 run after the Fighting Saints scored the first two points of the contest.  The lead for CCSJ would continue during the first twenty minutes of competition against USF getting as large as twelve points at the eight-minute mark.  The suffocating defense of the Crimson Wave displayed a solid team effort holding the Fighting Saints to only 25% shooting from the floor, along with five USF turnovers.  The two conference foes entered the locker room with CCSJ holding a seven-point advantage 27-20 at the break.  Senior guard Johnny Baldwin scored 6 points for the Crimson Wave at the intermission while senior teammate Marcus Moody controlled the glass with 6 first half rebounds.

A refocused ranked Fighting Saints team would begin the second half with a strong surge to reclaim the lead after the first five minutes of action 30-28.  USF Senior Ilya Illyayev shouldered the scoring responsibilities for the visitors with 23 second half points.  Five various lead changes would ensue during next five minutes of the half with the Crimson Wave remaining steady as a team to eventually capture the lead with less than ten minutes to play.  Crimson Wave sharpshooters Michael Brooks and Tyler Gaedele would hit key three point baskets late in the second half to keep the delicate lead over the Fighting Saints.  Illyayev would continue to hit big shots of his own to allow USF to stay in the game all the way into the final seconds.  However, a key layup by Baldwin combined with two perfect free throws by Brooks would seal the victory for Calumet College of St. Joseph over the #2 Fighting Saints of the University of St. Francis – IL.  Brooks would finish the night leading CCSJ with 18 points and 8 rebounds for the Crimson Wave.  Gaedele and Baldwin would contribute with 12 and 10 points respectively to go along with a solid performance in the paint by Moody who added 8 points and 8 rebounds.  Illyayev would lead all scorers with 29 points.

The upset victory of USF pushes the Crimson Wave's CCAC record to 7-2 and 12-5 overall.  The #2 Fighting Saints record falls to 6-2 in the CCAC and 14-2 for the season.

CCSJ will be back on the court on Saturday when they host non-conference Clarke University at 3:00 pm in the Rittenmeyer Athletic Center.
