Olivet Nazarene University and Saint Xavier University remained as the lone two teams in the winner's bracket at the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Softball Tournament as both teams went unbeaten on the first day of the six-team, double-elimination tournament. No. 3 seed Saint Xavier advanced with wins over Judson University (Ill.) and No. 2 seed University of St. Francis (Ill.), while No. 1 seed Olivet Nazarene defeated Robert Morris College (Ill.). Judson and Robert Morris went 1-1 on the day, while St. Francis went 0-1 and Cardinal Stritch went 0-2 and was eliminated from the tournament.
Robert Morris College (Ill.) and Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.) combined for five hits as Robert Morris pulled out a 3-1 victory in the first game of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament. Kelly Petersen had a two-run home run and Danielle Ferlito provided a solo homer to power the Eagles. Connie Gavin had solo home run for Cardinal Stritch. Neither team reached the scoreboard until Petersen's home run in the third. Gavin's home run in the fifth cut the RMC lead to one, but Ferlito gave the Eagles a two-run cushion with her home run in the bottom of the fifth. Robert Morris' Jennifer Burns picked up the win, allowing one earned run on two hits and registering 13 strikeouts. Cardinal Stritch's Val Stramowski suffered the loss, allowing three earned runs on three hits, but striking out seven.
Megan Paradzinski went 3-for-4 and scored twice leading Saint Xavier University (Ill.) to a 6-2 victory over Judson University (Ill.) in the first round of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament on Wednesday. Five other Cougars had two hits, including Courtney Murphy, who also drove in a pair of runs. Saint Xavier took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the third, then tacked on three runs in the fifth and a run in the sixth. Judson tallied two runs in the seventh for the four-run difference. Nicole Dimiceli and Tricia Lakotish led Judson with two hits each. Saint Xavier's Jalyn Shearer allowed two earned runs on seven hits, but struck out nine to earn the win.
Lauren Chessum threw a five-inning no-hitter as Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) advanced with an 8-0 victory. Chessum faced two batters over the limit, recording one strikeout. The Tigers scored all eight runs in the fourth inning with seven of the runs being unearned via three Robert Morris errors. Nora Duffy had the big hit for the Tigers in the inning, a three-run home run. Duffy and Amy Murray both finished with two hits, with Duffy driving in three runs and Murray driving in two.
Gianna Pavone drove in Ally Kelley from first base in the top of the seventh inning as Saint Xavier rallied from a 1-0 deficit to defeat University of St. Francis (Ill.), 2-1. St. Francis took a 1-0 lead in the fourth on Kim Malacina's RBI double that scored Caitlin Griffin. Pavone then tied the score with a double in the fifth that scored Courtney Murphy. In the SXU seventh, the first two batters were retired before Kelley reached on an error. Pavone followed with her second RBI double of the game. Pavone finished with two of Saint Xavier's three hits, while Carolyn Rupsis led the St. Francis offense with two hits. Ashley Shearer picked up the win, allowing one unearned run on seven hits, while striking out four. Malacina suffered the loss, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and striking out seven.
