CHICAGO --- Calumet College of St. Joseph used a red-hot shooting hand to upset Purdue University Calumet, 72-50, while Roosevelt University avoided the same fate by outlasting Indiana University South Bend, 73-68, in overtime Monday night in the opening round of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Tournament.
Both winners now hit the road to square off against the top clubs in each division in Cardinal Stritch University and Olivet Nazarene University on Wednesday. Roosevelt (15-15) gets South Division champion Olivet Nazarene (16-12), while Calumet St. Joseph (15-15) meets up with North Division champ Cardinal Stritch (27-3).
Recapping Monday's action:
CALUMET ST. JOSEPH 72, PURDUE CALUMET 50 (Box): Calumet St. Joseph built a double-digit lead in the game's first 5:30 and never looked back in the road victory. The Crimson Wave shot .528 from the field for the game (28-of-53) and an even more impressive .591 from three-point range (13-of-22). Purdue Calumet, meanwhile, struggled to find its shot all night long converting at just a .333 clip (20-of-60) with just four three-pointers in 23 attempts (.174). The Peregrines also made just 50 percent of their free throws. CCSJ's Robert Jackson led all scorers with 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the field. Franqlin Gatson nailed 5-of-8 three-pointers to net another 21 markers for the winners, while Brian Brilmyer authored a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Noah Allen was the lone Peregrine to score as many as 11 points.
ROOSEVELT 73, INDIANA SOUTH BEND 68 (OT) (Box): After Indiana South Bend's Chris Beam forced the 11th tie of the game and overtime by hitting the back end of a two-shot foul with under one second to play in regulation, Roosevelt opened the overtime by scoring seven of the first eight points en route to the victory. No fewer than five Lakers scored in double figures led by Joe Harks' 21 points with 10 coming at the free throw line in as many attempts. For the game, Roosevelt was 24-of-30 at the line (.800). Tyree York added another 15 points, six rebounds and six assists. Indiana South Bend had four players total at least 10 points topped by Chris and Brandon Beam with 18 points each.
