Towson, Md. - Saint Xavier University sophomore guard Brad Karp (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) earned a second team spot on the prestigious 2011-12 Capital One Academic All-America College Division Men's Basketball Team when the national honorees were announced Monday morning.  Student-athletes receiving this distinction are chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and recognized as the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.  Karp was one of just 15 players nationwide from the College Division, which combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools, to be recognized.  He holds a 3.50 cumulative grade-point average (GPA) and is working toward a biology degree at SXU.

Karp currently leads the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) in scoring averaging 23.8 points per game.  He is also second in the conference in rebounding (8.6 per game) and blocked shots (1.2 per game) as well as shooting league-bests in both field goal percentage (.592) and three-point field goal percentage (.404).  Karp ranks No. 3 in the entire NAIA for scoring average and is No. 12 in the nation for field goal percentage.  To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.

Saint Xavier (20-8 overall/5-3 CCAC) heads to Joliet, Ill., on Wednesday, February 22, for a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) game against University of St. Francis (Ill.).  The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
